The Scale and Arpeggio Intensive course is intended to give students a more solid understanding of the fretbaord while getting ideas of the “tools” used in soloing and improvisation.  Each week, students will be given a handful of exercises using various types of scales and arpeggios in various keys, along with a tune from either the bluegrass or swing/jazz repertoire as a vehicle for using ideas from that week’s exercises in creating solos.  The goal is to help students gain a better understanding of how music works, and to get ideas to help them advance more quickly and have more fun playing with others.  The course is intended for students at an intermediate to advanced level.

Classes meet every Tuesday from June 11 to July 9 (with the week of July 2 off due to Matt’s tour schedule) at 8 pm eastern time, with practice/review sessions every Saturday from June  15 to July 13 at 11 am eastern time.  Students are encouraged to attend the live sessions, but will be able to view the sessions afterwards on the class website in the event they cannot attend live.

    Hi Matt,

I’m interested in taking the Scale and Arpeggio class but I’m concerned about the description that indicates students should be at an intermediate or advanced level. Can you say a bit more about the kind of experience students should have to get the most out of this class? Thanks very much.

    • Hi Jim,

I think students at all levels can get something out of the course if they apply themselves. But I’ll be focusing on scales and arpeggios in all keys, which will get a bit more challenging unless students have a decent amount of experience and knowledge of the fretboard. And we’ll be talking about applying concepts from the course to improvisation and creating solos as well. So if students have some experience playing tunes and jamming with other people, it’ll certainly help as far as the improv concepts go.
All that said, students at all levels are invited to register for the course, and if a student finds the course too difficult or too easy for their ability level within the firts week of classes, I offer a full refund for the course.

I hope that helps! Looking forward to having you in the class, Jim!

      Thanks,
      Matt

  2. Jenny Glenn says:

Hi Matt, Both student Susan Lembo (from Mando Camp in MA) and I Jenny Glenn are excited and signed up for the scale and arpeggio class!

Due to a rehearsal tomorrow nite we can’t attend the first live session, but look forward to the week two live as well as week one recorded.
Thanks so much for your wonderful classes and generous teaching!

  3. Brad Tafoya says:

    Matt,

I missed the first week but am still insterested. Is is possible for me to still take it?

    • Hi Brad,

Absolutely! The material from week 1 is available to view and download on the class website, and the videos of both our Tuesday class session and Saturday practice session are available to review on the class site as well. And you won’t necessarily need to know the materials in week 1 to be able to work on the materials we’ll look at in week 2. You can always come back to week 1 material later.
Let me know if you have any other questions. Hope to see you in class!

      Thanks Brad!
      Best,
      Matt Flinner
