Students will not be able to hear each other (due to internet lags), but they’ll be able to play along with Matt and review all the tunes they learned during the three day camp.

All courses will be geared toward a general intermediate ability level; instructors will assume that students know basic chords and can play at least a few tunes.

Students will only be able to see and hear the instructor(s) during the class sessions, but they can request to have their microphone unmuted and/or webcam turned on in order to ask questions via audio and video as well. Questions will be entertained throughout each class session and especially during the afternoon workshop sessions. Students are encouraged to make the sessions as interactive as they want to!

    yes, want to register…
I hope you will remember to enable recording on zoom…

    • Hi Jeffrey,

We will enable recording for attendees, and I will be recording all of the sessions from my end as well. My recordings will be downloadable via Vimeo after the camp ends. Looking forward to it, and glad to have you on board!

      Thanks,
      Matt

I’ve been playing guitar for over 30 years, and have played and studied jazz on upright and electric bass as well (have done a lot of jazz ensembles and some gigs on bass in NYC where I live over the years), so I have good foundation of physical dexterity and theory.

Just got a mandolin a week ago and I am learning basic chords, and was able to learn the opening chorus of “Turn of the Century” off of Dave Grisman’s & Tony Rice’s “Tone Poems” by ear over the course of a few days. I’ve been doing online tutorials from MandoWeb, and they are good if a bit slow-paced. I have a daily practice routine and have for years, so I’m simply extending it to mandolin.

Would this camp be good for me? I’m really looking to connect with a community, possibly find a teacher, and get into old time and jazz on mandolin with maybe some bluegrass. I just have no clue where to start and am overwhelmed with resources.

    Thanks!

    • Hi Joel,

Nice! And welcome to the mandolin community. I think the camp might be a great fit for you, as we’ll all be teaching at least in part by ear (with PDFs of all material for reference). My main concern would be that things might move too slowly for you; you might get the stuff we’re doing by ear fairly quickly, and may spend a good chunk of the classes waiting for us to move on. I’d be really curious to see what you think of Don’s jazz class; your background will certainly make it easier, and the stuff he teaches often goes fairly deep.
You’re welcome to try it out, and if for any reason you find that it just doesn’t work for you, I’m happy to offer a full refund. I want these camps to be as useful as possible to the students, and while I think it’s possible you’d get a lot out of it, I’d hate to have you bored! I will say that you’d be connecting with a great community of teachers and students. Anyway, let me know if that works for you.

      Thanks Joel!

      Best,
      Matt
