Mandolin Practice Techniques: 5-day Courses to Help You Improve Your Playing

“All your courses are really good, very well designed, and you have a great teaching style and a relaxed, open, while also serious, approach – which really comes across with the live lessons – thank you for being so encouraging always!”–-Penny J.

“After buying six mandolins and umpteen books…I am convinced your course is best $100 I have invested in my mandolin journey to date.  Finally, I’m getting the discpline I need with your exercises to learn scales, arpeggios, double stops, fingering techniques, learn the fretboard (the essential tools I need)…and most importantly to learn how those things fit into playing tunes.” —Rick D.

Join Matt Flinner for a series of 5-day courses this summer which are geared toward helping the aspiring mandolin student practice more efficiently and improve their playing skills more quickly.  Every day for five days, students will run through a series of exercises and one tune, with Matt guiding them in a live 30-minute online practice session.  Students who are unable to make the live sessions can view them later that day or evening on the class website, as all sessions will be recorded.

Students will be given exercises in the following areas: picking exercises, arpeggios, scales, fingering exercises, double stops, and a tune for the week.  Students will receive the materials in PDF form four weeks ahead of time (or whenever they sign up) so that they have a chance to learn them before the course begins.  Matt will then guide them through daily practice sessions for five straight days, giving them tips on how to improve and how to practice more effectively.

The first course begins June 5 and runs through June 9, with class sessions taking place from 10-10:30 am eastern time.

The registration fee is $40.

Students can view all materials (videos and PDFs) on a class website any time, and they can also download and keep all PDFs and videos (including recordings of the class sessions) to practice with on their own time if they wish to.

I’m an aspiring mandolin player but after playing for a couple of years I feel like I’ve reached a plateau. I play old time tunes, by myself and with others, mostly just the melody with only occasional ventures into being more creative. Is this enough musical skill to benefit from one of your summer courses, which sound like just what I need?

    • flinner says:

      Hi Philip,

Sounds to me like you’re off to a good start, and I think the course should be beneficial to you. We’ll go through exercises in several different areas of technique (picking, scales, arpeggios, fingering exercises etc.), so if you find even a few of those useful you can take them and run with them. We’ll also look at ways pf practicing that I’ve found to be helpful to me over the years, and I think they can be helpful to students regarless of ability level.
I hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

      Thanks Philip!

      Best,
      Matt Flinner

Hi Matt — Course sounds very helpful! But that 10:00am time just will not work. Is it worth doing from the recordings?

    • flinner says:

      Hi Guy,

It should be fine—as long as you show up to watch the recordings! I’ve had several students proceed through the courses watching the videos since they couldn’t make the class times, and it seemed to work well for them.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

      Thanks Guy!

      Best,
      Matt Flinner

    Matt,
Is it too early to request the PDF’s for the Mandolin Practice Techniques class?

  4. Danny Hirsch says:

Hi. Just wanted to confirm my registration for the up coming 5-day course starting 6/5. Thanks!

  5. Lisa Kemna says:

Hi. Are the PDF materials for the 2nd week of Technique class available? Thank you! (I need all the practice I can get.)

    • flinner says:

      Hi Lisa,
Yes; you should have received them in the last few days. Let me know if they didn’t arrive. Looking forward to having you in the class!

      Thanks,
      Matt

Hi Matt, longtime fan from GA. Looking into this practice course. I’ve been playing a while (24 years and in various bands) and would consider myself advanced. Would this course be too easy for me? Just looking to devote some hours and discipline to “getting back to basics” and upping my overall game. Look forward to hearing your thoughts. Thanks, Jason

  7. Gordon Jensen says:

I just registered for the mandolin practice course. I was wondering how I download the pdf with the class materials. Thanks, Gordon

    • flinner says:

      Hi Gordon,

You should have received the materials in a zip file within a couple of days of signing up; let me know if they didn’t get to you.
      See you in class!

      Thanks,
      Matt

  8. Liz K says:

Are these 2 separate courses with different content? I’m considering signing up for both of them. Thanks, Liz

    • flinner says:

      Hi Liz,

Yes, they are different in content. They’ll use similar concepts, though. Week 2 will give students that much more to work on in scales, arpeggios, double stops, etc., along with a different tune that we’ll be practicing. I hope that helps! See you in class—
      Thanks!
      Matt
